EDITORS COMMENTS
Torii Kiyohiro's triptych print, titled "Beauties of the Three Capitals: Shimabara in Kyoto (right), Yoshiwara in Edo (center), and Shinmachi in Osaka (left)," dating back to around 1755, showcases the elegant and distinctive fashion of three major cities in Japan during the 18th century. On the right, we see a woman from Shimabara in Kyoto, dressed in a beautifully colored kimono with intricate patterns. She wears a parasol to protect herself from the sun and dons a pair of geta, traditional Japanese sandals, with her feet adorned in colorful socks. Her hair is styled in an elaborate updo, held in place by a decorative hairpin. In the center, we find a woman from Yoshiwara in Edo, dressed in a stylish kimono with a bold design. She accessorizes her outfit with a long, flowing obi belt and carries a parasol to shield herself from the sun. Her hair is worn in a more casual style, with a few loose strands framing her face. On the left, a man from Shinmachi in Osaka is depicted wearing a formal outfit, complete with a long, flowing robe and a wide-brimmed hat. He wears a pair of high, carriage boots with intricate designs, and carries a parasol under his arm. His attire is adorned with various accessories, including a sword at his side and a fan in his hand. This uncut hosoban triptych, also known as urushi e, is a prime example of the artistic school of ukiyo-e, which flourished during the Edo period in Japan. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the print transport us back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Japan's past.
