Bath time, c1881. Creator: Randolph Caldecott
Bath time, c1881. When I was a farmer, a Farmers Boy, I used to keep my masters children. The Farmers Boy, wearing a bonnet and apron, baths his employers children. A small girl squirts him with a sponge as he dries her sibling on his lap. A third child sits in a bath of water on the floor. Cured hams, onions and dried herbs hang from the ceiling, and a wooden press can be seen behind the settle. From " The Farmers Boy" written and illustrated by Randolph Caldecott. [Originally published in 1881 as part of Caldecotts Picture Books series]

EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a charming scene from the past, painted by the talented Randolph Caldecott. In this delightful print, we are transported to a rustic farmhouse where a young boy, dressed in an apron and bonnet, attends to his employer's children during their bath. The image is filled with playful moments as one of the mischievous girls squirts water at the boy with a sponge while he lovingly dries her sibling on his lap. Another child sits contentedly in a bathtub on the floor. The room itself exudes warmth and character; cured hams, onions, and dried herbs hang from the ceiling while a wooden press stands behind an inviting settle. Taken from "The Farmers Boy" both written and illustrated by Caldecott himself as part of his Picture Books series published in 1881, this artwork showcases not only his artistic talent but also provides us with glimpses into daily life during that era. With its vivid colors and attention to detail, this print evokes nostalgia for simpler times when childcare was often entrusted to capable young men like our protagonist here. It reminds us of the importance of hygiene and care even amidst playfulness. Randolph Caldecott's work continues to captivate audiences today through its humor and relatability. This particular piece serves as a testament to his ability to bring joy into everyday scenes while preserving historical context for generations to come.
