Banqueting Scene with Khusrau and Shirin, from a Khamsa (Quintet) of Nizami (1141-1209), 1540-70
Banqueting Scene with Khusrau and Shirin, from a Khamsa (Quintet) of Nizami (1141-1209), 1540-70. The Khamsa is a collection of five narrative poems, one of which is dedicated to the romance of Khusrau Parviz (590-628), a pre-Islamic king of Iran, and Shirin, his beloved Armenian princess. Khusraus turban has the anachronistic baton worn by Safavid royalty and the egret feather, an emblem of nobility instituted by the Mongols in the 1200s. Here the lovers are seated before a tent in an idyllic landscape at night, indicated by the dark blue sky dotted with stars, painted with now tarnished silver. Shirin serves figs and pomegranates, symbolic of fertility, to Khusrau as attendants bring more figs and wine. Next to Shirins black horse, the musician at bottom right plays an oud, a stringed instrument similar to a lute

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Banqueting Scene with Khusrau and Shirin, taken from a Khamsa (Quintet) of Nizami dating back to 1540-70. The Khamsa is a collection of five narrative poems, one of which beautifully narrates the romance between Khusrau Parviz, an ancient king of Iran, and his beloved Armenian princess Shirin. In this exquisite artwork, we see the lovers seated in front of a tent amidst an enchanting landscape at night. The deep blue sky adorned with silver stars sets the perfect backdrop for their intimate gathering. Khusrau's turban features both the baton worn by Safavid royalty and the egret feather - symbols of nobility introduced by different dynasties throughout history. Shirin graciously serves figs and pomegranates to her beloved as attendants bring more delicacies and wine. These fruits hold symbolic significance representing fertility, adding another layer to their romantic tale. A musician can be seen near Shirin's black horse playing an oud, a stringed instrument similar to a lute. This musical element adds harmony to the scene while enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal. The painting itself is crafted using opaque watercolour on paper embellished with gold accents. It belongs to the Safavid period in Iranian art history and was created in Shiraz during that time. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this extraordinary piece remains anonymous in terms of its creator but continues to captivate viewers with its intricate details and timeless portrayal of love and beauty from centuries past.
