Balaclava Heights, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Balaclava Heights, 1856. Sketch by...a Correspondent on board H.M.S. Leander..."The Castle seems of very great extent, covering the whole side of the hill facing the harbour...it must have been built by the Genoese about 1370, when they also colonised several other parts of the Crimea. Before the invention of gunpowder it must have been immensely strong; in fact, impregnable. The walls are for the most part in ruins, except the main connecting wall running down from the top of the hill to the sea-shore, which is built of granite rock. The round tower (on which Admiral Boxer planted the harbour signal-staff) is 480 feet above the level of the sea. The turret is about fifty feet high...The walls are about four feet thick, and not in the least damaged by time. Under the tower is a deep dungeon, which has strong ringbolts at the bottom, evidently for the imprisonment of captives'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Balaclava Heights in the Crimean Peninsula, as sketched by an unknown correspondent aboard H.M.S. Leander and published in the Illustrated London News in 1856. The imposing castle dominates the hillside, facing the harbor with its vast expanse covering nearly the entire side. This architectural marvel is believed to have been constructed by the Genoese around 1370, making it over 500 years old at the time of this sketch. Before the invention of gunpowder, the castle would have been virtually impregnable. The main connecting wall, built of granite rock, runs from the castle's summit to the seashore. The round tower, standing at a height of 480 feet above sea level, is approximately fifty feet tall. The walls, which are about four feet thick, remain largely intact, with only the main connecting wall showing signs of damage. The round tower houses a deep dungeon, complete with strong ringbolts at its base, intended for the imprisonment of captives. The castle's history is steeped in intrigue and conflict, having played a significant role in the Crimean War. This evocative print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of grandeur and history, captured in the annals of the Illustrated London News.
