EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image showcases the Badge and Chain of the Mayor of Hull from the year 1857. The chain, which can be traced back to the mayoralty of Anthony Bannister in 1856, is adorned with intricate gold links and two shoulder bosses. The center shield, added during the mayoralty of William Henry Moss in 1857, bears an engraved inscription that reads, "This Chain, by permission of the Council, was altered and enlarged, and the centre shield, with the shoulder bosses, added to it, by and at the expense of William Henry Moss, Mayor of Kingston-upon-Hull, at the close of his Mayoralty, November, 1857." The badge, which can be attached to the chain or worn separately, is a symbol of the mayoral authority and tradition. This historic artifact is a testament to the rich political history of Hull, a city in England. The image is a wood engraving, likely published in the Illustrated London News in 1857. The photograph captures the intricate details of the gold chain and the engraved shield, providing a glimpse into the past and the grandeur of the mayoral regalia.
