Ascent of Mont Blanc: M. Bisson's photographic expedition... 1862. Creator: Mason Jackson
Ascent of Mont Blanc: M. Bisson's photographic expedition leaving the station of the Grands Mulets, 1862. Engraving from a photograph by Auguste-Rosalie Bisson, the first person to take pictures from the summit of Mont Blanc. Modern science has recorded few triumphs greater than those gained within the last few years by photography...The photographic lens opened the march, escorted by a perfect arsenal of chemicals and collodion, wooden stands, tripods, rope ladders, tents, mattresses, and the indispensable bundles of provisions...A thick fog soon surrounded us; frozen snow mixed with hail beat in our faces...frequent falling avalanches thundered in our ears...the "caravan" arrived safely at the highest ridge of Mont Blanc. The sky was splendid; there was scarcely any wind...but nearly all the voyageurs complained of an extraordinary weariness, and many were suffering from pains in the head and spasms caused by the rarefaction of the atmosphere. Without losing an instant of the favourable weather in an ill-timed admiration of the magnificent panorama...the apparatus [was] prepared...and to M. Bisson's intense satisfaction...three fine panoramic views were taken out of the machine and fixed for printing in his Parisian ateliers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

Ascent of Mont Blanc - M. Bisson's Photographic Expedition, 1862
EDITORS COMMENTS
by Mason Jackson captures an historic moment in the annals of mountain climbing and photographic history. This evocative image depicts the preparations for the ascent of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe, led by French photographer Auguste-Rosalie Bisson. The photographic expedition, the first of its kind to reach the summit, is shown leaving the station of the Grands Mulets. The scene is set against a backdrop of rugged terrain and ominous weather, with a thick fog enshrouding the mountain and frozen snow mixed with hail battering the climbers. Despite the challenging conditions, the team presses on, their determination unwavering. The caption, taken from the Illustrated London News of 1862, extols the achievements of both modern science and photography. The photographic lens had opened up new possibilities, paving the way for the exploration of previously inaccessible terrains. The expedition was armed with an impressive array of equipment, including chemicals, collodion, wooden stands, tripods, rope ladders, tents, mattresses, and provisions. Despite the hardships, the team pressed on, reaching the highest ridge of Mont Blanc, where the sky cleared to reveal a splendid view. However, the climbers were not deterred by the breathtaking panorama, and instead focused on preparing their equipment to capture the momentous occasion. To Bisson's immense satisfaction, three panoramic views were successfully taken and fixed for printing in his Parisian ateliers. This photograph is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of technology to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. It stands as a reminder of the early days of mountain climbing and photographic exploration, and the pioneering spirit that drove individuals to push the boundaries of what was thought possible.
