EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled 'Artists' Models on the Steps of the Trinita de Monte - Rome, 1850,' showcases an intriguing assemblage of characters that were a common sight in the streets of Rome during the 19th century. The scene unfolds on the grand flight of steps ascending from the Piazza di Spagna to the Promenade on the Pincian Hill. At the left edge of the illustration, a bandit and an aged man are depicted, their faces etched with the marks of time and the weight of their experiences. In the center, a Madonna, holding an infant, is accompanied by St. John and a gentle shepherd, half-reclined above them. The right side of the image reveals other subjects dressed in various characterful attire. The photograph, which is believed to be an engraving from the Illustrated London News published in 1850, offers a glimpse into the diverse and vibrant life of Rome during that era. The artists' models, who are chiefly waiting for hire, are a significant part of the scene. Their peculiar costumes and poses would have been essential for the painter or sculptor to capture the essence of their subjects. The photograph also features a water carrier, or bhishti, with a water jar, or jar, on his head, and a dog lying at his feet. The presence of the dog adds to the authenticity of the scene, as they were a common companion to the water carriers during their daily work. This photograph is a valuable historical document, capturing the essence of the Roman streets and the various professions that thrived there. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who populated the city during the Victorian era, and the role that art played in documenting and preserving their stories.
