Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, French politician and economist, early 19th century. Artist: William Thomas Fry
Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, French politician and economist, early 19th century. Turgot (1727-1781) was an advocate of free trade and laissez-faire principles in economics. As comptroller-general of finances (1774-1776), he advocated radical reforms to the French economy and taxation system. His policies, particularly edicts abolishing guilds and levying taxation on all, including the nobility, made Turgot many enemies, and Louis XVI was persuaded to demand his resignation. Turgots edicts were repealed, but his conviction that the only alternative to radical reform was revolution proved to be correct in 1789

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, a prominent French politician and economist from the early 19th century. Painted by William Thomas Fry, this portrait showcases Turgot's influential role in advocating for free trade and laissez-faire principles in economics. During his tenure as comptroller-general of finances from 1774 to 1776, Turgot implemented radical reforms aimed at transforming the French economy and taxation system. His bold policies included abolishing guilds and imposing taxes on all citizens, including the nobility. However, these measures faced strong opposition from various factions, ultimately leading to Louis XVI demanding Turgot's resignation. Although his edicts were eventually repealed, history proved that Turgot was ahead of his time with his belief that revolution would be inevitable without significant reform. This conviction became evident during the French Revolution in 1789. In this engraving, we see a man who dedicated himself to challenging traditional economic structures and fighting for change. With his wig symbolizing authority and intellect, Turgot stands as a testament to the power of ideas in shaping nations' destinies. This remarkable portrait serves as a reminder of Turgot's contributions as an economist, statesman, and reformist thinker whose influence continues to resonate even today.
