EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a powerful moment from the mid-18th century painting "An Angel appears to the Apostle Peter in prison". Created by Italian Venetian painter and printmaker Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, this artwork showcases his exceptional talent and mastery of various mediums. Known for his grand frescoes adorning churches and palaces across Italy, Germany, and Spain, Tiepolo was also highly skilled in etchings, oil paintings, and pen with wash techniques. In this particular scene, we witness Saint Peter imprisoned as an angel descends upon him. The intensity of the moment is palpable as light illuminates the dark cell while Peter gazes up at the celestial being before him. This image beautifully portrays both religious devotion and human vulnerability. Originally part of the Former Orloff Collection in Paris, France, this artwork has found its way into The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo Volume I by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln. Published by The Pegasus Press in 1928, it serves as a testament to Tiepolo's enduring legacy as one of the most significant artists of his time. As we contemplate this striking composition captured through pen with wash technique on paper, we are reminded not only of Tiepolo's artistic brilliance but also of his ability to convey profound spiritual narratives through his work.
