Alessandro Voltas wet pile battery, 1800
Alessandro Voltas wet pile or battery, 1800. Italian physicist Volta (1745-1827) was the inventor of the voltaic pile, an early battery and the first source of current electricity. This consisted of two different metals, separated by chemicals in order to enable a flow of electricity. In 1775, he invented the electrophorus, a precursor of the induction machine, and in 1777 he invented an inflammable air electric pistol. The unit of electromotive force volt is named after him. From Voltas paper published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, London, 1800

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Alessandro Volta's wet pile battery, a groundbreaking invention from the 18th century. Italian physicist Alessandro Volta, known for his contributions to the field of electricity, created this early form of battery that became the first source of current electricity. The photograph beautifully captures the intricate design of the voltaic pile, which consisted of two different metals separated by chemicals to enable an electric current flow. Volta's scientific achievements were not limited to this remarkable invention. In addition to his wet pile battery, he also invented other notable devices such as the electrophorus and an inflammable air electric pistol. His contributions earned him great recognition in the scientific community and even led to the naming of a unit of electromotive force after him - the volt. This monochrome image transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate both Volta's ingenuity and Italy's rich history in science and innovation. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in harnessing electrical energy since Volta's pioneering work. The print is part of Oxford Science Archive collection and was captured by an unknown creator. Its presence evokes curiosity about our technological advancements over centuries while honoring one man's significant impact on our understanding and utilization of electricity – Alessandro Volta.
