EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma, a prominent figure in 16th-century European politics. As the nephew of King Philip II of Spain, he played a crucial role in various military campaigns and diplomatic endeavors. The image showcases Farnese dressed in elaborate attire, complete with a ruff collar that was fashionable during the Elizabethan era. His commanding presence is evident as he gazes confidently into the distance, exuding power and authority. Farnese's military prowess is highlighted by his distinguished career. He gained recognition for his valor at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 and later led Spanish forces against the Dutch revolt in the Netherlands. Serving as Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands from 1578, he wielded significant influence over this important territory. Notably, Farnese was slated to command the Spanish army during their ill-fated invasion of England in 1588. However, after suffering defeat at sea by Queen Elizabeth I's navy – famously known as the Spanish Armada – plans for invasion were abandoned. In addition to his military achievements, Farnese also demonstrated diplomatic skills when he successfully relieved the Siege of Paris while serving in France in 1590. This illustration originated from an engraving based on a painting housed at Musee de Versailles. It was published by Boussod, Valadon & Co. , offering viewers an exquisite glimpse into history through its intricate details and monochromatic aesthetic.
