Agate cup, (1881). Creator: W. M. McGill
Agate cup, (1881). Etching of a cup made of agate with silver mounts, made in Britain by Roger Flint. It was bought in 1867 as an Elizabethan masterpiece, but the various elements date from different periods. The bowl is probably a later replacement, made in India in the late 18th or early 19th century. The stem and foot were made in Antwerp, c1550-1560. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Agate cup, a true masterpiece of craftsmanship. Created by W. M. McGill in 1881, this etching beautifully captures the intricate details of this remarkable artifact. The cup itself is a fascinating blend of different periods and cultures. Originally purchased in 1867 as an Elizabethan treasure, it has since been discovered that its various elements date back to different eras. The bowl, believed to be a later replacement, was crafted in India during the late 18th or early 19th century. On the other hand, the stem and foot were skillfully made in Antwerp between 1550-1560. Displayed within "The South Kensington Museum" now known as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, this agate cup with silver mounts stands as a testament to both British artistry and international influences. Its decorative design reflects Dutch aesthetics while incorporating Indian craftsmanship. Through this evocative print, we are transported back through time to appreciate not only the beauty but also the historical significance of such artifacts. With its delicate engravings and meticulous attention to detail captured by Roger Flint's artistic vision, this image invites us into a world where art transcends borders and centuries collide harmoniously.
