Admiral Darlan, Vichy French propaganda poster, c1940-1942. Artist: Roland Coudon
Admiral Darlan, Vichy French propaganda poster, c1940-1942. Jean Louis Xavier Francois Darlan (1881-1942) commanded the French naval forces early in World War II. After France surrendered to Germany, Darlan served as vice premier in the pro-German Vichy regime. In November 1942 he was captured, and ordered a cease-fire after negotiations with Allied forces. He was appointed high commissioner of French North Africa, but his leadership was repudiated by Charles de Gaulles partisans. Darlan was assassinated in late December. This poster conveys a message from Darlan to freed French POWs reminding them to remember their comrades still in imprisonment and to help bring about their release by supporting the policies of the Vichy government

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a propaganda poster featuring Admiral Darlan, created by the talented artist Roland Coudon during the years 1940-1942. Jean Louis Xavier Francois Darlan, an influential figure in French naval forces during World War II, played a significant role in the pro-German Vichy regime after France's surrender to Germany. However, his leadership was met with opposition from Charles de Gaulle's supporters. The poster itself conveys a powerful message from Admiral Darlan to liberated French prisoners of war (POWs). It serves as a reminder for them to remember their comrades who are still imprisoned and encourages their support for the policies of the Vichy government in order to secure their release. The image depicts Admiral Darlan wearing his distinguished naval uniform and cap, exuding authority and determination. Despite his controversial involvement with the Vichy regime, Admiral Darlan's story took an unexpected turn when he was captured in November 1942. During negotiations with Allied forces, he ordered a cease-fire which led to his appointment as high commissioner of French North Africa. Tragically, just weeks later in late December, he was assassinated. This photograph not only captures an important historical moment but also highlights the power of propaganda art media during wartime. It serves as a poignant reminder of complex political alliances and personal sacrifices made during this tumultuous period in history.
