This woodblock print, created by the master artist Shunsho in 1777, showcases two renowned Kabuki actors of the Edo period: Nakamura Nakazo I as Onmaya Kisanda, dressed as the lion dancer Kakubei, and Segawa Kikunojo III as Shizuka Gozen. The scene is taken from the second part of the play "Chigo Torii Tobiiri Kitsune" (Heavenly Child--The Fox Leaps Through the Shrine Gate), which was performed at the Ichimura Theater in the eleventh month of that year. Kabuki, a traditional Japanese theatrical art form, was known for its elaborate costumes and dramatic performances. In this print, Nakamura Nakazo I, dressed as the female impersonator Onmaya Kisanda, dons the vibrant and intricately designed costume of Kakubei, the lion dancer. His outfit includes a bold, grey lion mask, a red and gold lion suit, and a long, flowing robe adorned with various patterns and colors. Segawa Kikunojo III, on the other hand, portrays Lady Shizuka Gozen, who is dressed in a beautiful, flowing kimono. The kimono's design features a delicate, floral pattern in shades of pink and green, with a contrasting black belt and obi (sash) adding definition to the outfit. The print also showcases the influence of the Hidetsuru and Katsumiyagawa Yusuke schools, which were prominent during the Edo period. The Aiban (block printing) technique used to create this artwork allowed for the intricate details and vivid colors to be captured, making it a true masterpiece of 18th-century Japanese art.
