EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, created by Ishikawa Toyonobu in the 18th century, depicts the renowned actor Segawa Kikunojo I as a courtesan. The image is believed to be a portrait of Kikunojo playing the role of Nishikigi in "A Group of Sumo Wrestlers of the Izu Peninsula" which was performed at Nakamura theater in December 1747. During Japan's Edo period, Kabuki actors like Kikunojo were celebrated for their ability to portray both male and female roles with equal grace and skill. Known as onnagata or oyama, these male performers specialized in female impersonation and cross-dressing. In this hand-coloured woodblock print, we see Kikunojo fully embodying the character of a courtesan, displaying his versatility as an actor. The vibrant colors and intricate details bring this theatrical scene to life. The vertical oban diptych format allows us to appreciate every aspect of Kikunojo's performance - from his elegant kimono adorned with delicate patterns to his expressive gestures captured mid-act. As we observe him reading from a scroll, it becomes evident that he has mastered not only physicality but also the art of storytelling through his craft. This artwork serves as a testament to the rich heritage and artistic excellence prevalent during Japan's Tokugawa period. It offers viewers an opportunity to delve into the world of traditional Japanese theatre while celebrating the talent and dedication exhibited by actors such as Segawa Kikunojo I.
