EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Abdur Rahman, the Ameer of Afghanistan in the 1880s. However, it is mistakenly captioned as Sher Ali Khan, the Emir of Afghanistan. The portrait showcases a bearded man wearing traditional Afghan clothing and an astrakhan hat. Sher Ali Khan was the ruler of Afghanistan during the Second Anglo-Afghan War that erupted in 1878. Fleeing Kabul as British forces approached, he tragically passed away. This image is featured in "The Life and Deeds of Earl Roberts". Volume III by J. Maclaren Cobban. The photograph offers a glimpse into this significant period in Afghan history when Britain's influence loomed large over the country. It serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics between colonial powers and local rulers during this time. Despite its misidentification, this portrait provides valuable insights into Afghan culture and fashion from that era. The attention to detail can be seen in Abdur Rahman's fur-trimmed attire, which adds an element of regality to his appearance. As we study this image today, we are transported back to a pivotal moment where political tensions shaped Afghanistan's destiny while shedding light on individuals like Abdur Rahman who played crucial roles in their nation's history.
