A Blizzard - March 12th, 1911, (1913). Artist: George Clarke Simpson

A Blizzard - March 12th, 1911, (1913). Pressure tube anemometer record. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "A Blizzard - March 12th, 1911" by artist George Clarke Simpson, transports us back to a moment of great historical significance. It captures the essence of the final expedition led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott in his quest to reach the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, which took place from 1910 to 1913, was not only an ambitious adventure but also a scientific endeavor. Comprising a diverse team including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers and more, Scott aimed to continue his previous scientific work while being the first to conquer the geographic South Pole. However, as fate would have it, when Scott and his companions – Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans – finally reached their destination on January 17th in 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and blizzards along the way; they were met with crushing disappointment. The Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had already achieved this feat one month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and running out of supplies during their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March that same year. Their bodies were discovered eight months later alongside their poignant diaries. This print is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913. It serves as a haunting reminder of both human resilience and nature's unforgiving power within one of history's most gripping polar expeditions.
