EDITORS COMMENTS
This engravning, titled "Hesperides: sive, De malorum aureorum cultura et usu" and created by Giovanni Battista Ferrari in 1646, depicts a scene from Greek mythology featuring Hercules, the Hesperides, Ladon the dragon, and the golden apple. Hercules, the legendary hero, is shown here in the process of completing one of his twelve labors: the retrieval of the golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides. The Hesperides, nymphs who tended to the garden, are depicted as beautiful women with snakes for hair, guarding the golden apples. Ladon, the serpent-dragon, coils around the tree, ready to protect the precious fruit. Hercules, armed with a club and a bow, approaches the scene with determination, prepared to overcome the guardian dragon and claim the golden apples. The apples themselves are shown as large, golden orbs, hanging from the tree. This intricately detailed engraving, which is part of a larger work on the cultivation and use of golden apples, offers a captivating glimpse into the rich mythology and art of the 17th century.
