EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of triumph for Herbert Hoover as he was declared the successful Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States in the election year of 1928. Born in West Branch, Iowa, in 1874, Hoover had already made a name for himself through his humanitarian efforts during World War I. His involvement in the relief activities, particularly in Europe, earned him the nickname "The Great Humanitarian." In the presidential race of 1928, Hoover ran against Al Smith, the Democratic Party's candidate. Hoover's campaign focused on his business acumen and his ability to manage the economy effectively. The election took place on November 7, 1928, and Hoover emerged as the victor, marking the end of the Democratic Party's streak of winning six consecutive presidential elections. However, Hoover's popularity began to wane during his presidency due to the economic downturn that began in 1929, known as the Great Depression. By the time of the 1932 presidential election, Hoover's approval ratings had plummeted, and he was defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Despite his shortcomings during the Depression, Hoover's presidency remains an important chapter in American history, particularly for his humanitarian efforts during World War I and his role as a transition figure between the Republican and Democratic parties.
