Born on September 12, 1852, in Morley, near Leeds, Asquith rose to prominence as a brilliant parliamentarian and orator, earning him the nickname "The Lion of Oxford." Asquith's political career began in earnest in 1886 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for East Fife. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Liberal Party, becoming Home Secretary in 1905 and then Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1907. In 1908, he succeeded Campbell-Bannerman as Prime Minister, leading the country through a period of significant social and political change. During his tenure, Asquith oversaw the implementation of important reforms, including the National Insurance Act of 1911 and the Parliament Act of 1911, which significantly reduced the power of the House of Lords.
