EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures King Henry VI of England, signed intimately with his autograph, a poignant reminder of a turbulent and complex reign. Born on December 6, 1421, Henry was the youngest son of King Henry V, who died just one month before Henry's birth. Henry VI ascended to the throne at the tender age of nine months, and his minority was marked by the regency of his mother, Catherine of Valois, and later, the Duke of Gloucester, later known as Richard III. Henry's reign, which lasted from 1422 to 1461 and 1470 to 1471, was marked by internal strife and external threats. The Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars between the houses of Lancaster and York, began during his reign and ultimately led to his deposition and the rise of Richard III. Henry's weak leadership and inability to effectively govern during these tumultuous times contributed to the instability that plagued his reign. Despite the challenges he faced, Henry was a learned and pious king, known for his patronage of the arts and scholarship. He founded the College of King's Scholars, the precursor to the present-day King's College London, and supported the translation of Wycliffe's Bible into English. The year 1471 was a pivotal one in English history, as it marked the end of Henry VI's second reign and the beginning of the reign of Edward IV. This photograph, with Henry's autograph, offers a rare glimpse into the past, a tangible connection to a monarch whose reign was marked by both triumph and tragedy.
