EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the annals of English history, we find Henry the Young King, the future monarch of England, being crowned in the presence of his father, King Henry II, at the majestic York Minster in June 1170. The young Henry, who was the eldest surviving son of King Henry II, was crowned at the tender age of 18, with the intention of securing a peaceful succession and averting potential conflicts that might arise upon the death of the senior monarch. The scene is one of grandeur and solemnity, as the young king is shown seated on a magnificent throne, wearing the regal robes and holding the scepter and orb, while the Archbishop of York, who is officiating the ceremony, places the crown upon his head. King Henry II, dressed in his royal robes, looks on approvingly from a nearby chair, his expression a mix of pride and approval. The coronation of Henry the Young King was a significant event in the annals of English history, as it marked the first time in English history that a king was crowned while his father was still alive. However, despite the best intentions of the powerful figures orchestrating the ceremony, the young king's reign was short-lived. He predeceased his father in 1183, leaving the succession in the hands of his younger brother, Richard the Lionheart. This striking image, which captures the moment of Henry the Young King's coronation, is a testament to the rich history and traditions of the English monarchy, and serves as a reminder of the complexities and intrigues that have shaped the course of English history.
