1832 1891 Blavatsky Founder Judge Occultist Olcott Psychical Researcher Theosophical 1907

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907), an American co-founder of the Theosophical Society, an influential spiritual and philosophical movement that emerged in the late 19th century. Olcott is seen here in 1891, at the height of his career as a prominent occultist and psychical researcher. He is best known for his collaboration with Helena Blavatsky and William Quan Judge in establishing the Theosophical Society in New York City in 1875. Olcott's interest in the occult and spiritualism was sparked by his encounters with Blavatsky, who claimed to have supernatural abilities and knowledge of ancient wisdom. Together, they authored several influential works, including "Isis Unveiled" and "The Key to Theosophy," which explored various aspects of Eastern philosophy, mysticism, and the supernatural. Olcott's commitment to psychical research led him to investigate claims of spiritual phenomena, mediumship, and telepathy. He played a significant role in popularizing spiritualism in America and Europe, and his writings and lectures helped to shape the modern understanding of the occult and paranormal. Despite facing skepticism and criticism from some quarters, Olcott remained dedicated to his beliefs and continued to advocate for the study of the unknown until his death in 1907. This photograph, taken in the final decade of his life, captures a man who was not only a pioneering figure in the study of the occult but also a passionate seeker of spiritual truth.
