1830 1876 Brother Kingsley Novelist Thoughtful

EDITORS COMMENTS
This Carte-de-Visite (CDV) photograph captures the introspective and thoughtful expression of English novelist, Henry Kingsley (1830-1876). Seated in a high-backed chair, Kingsley gazes off into the distance, lost in deep thought. His brother Charles Kingsley, a well-known author and clergyman, penned a poignant tribute to Henry upon his death, describing him as 'a man of great intellectual power, of warm and generous heart, and of unwavering integrity.' Henry Kingsley was born in Holborn, London, and was the elder brother of Charles and George Henry Kingsley. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and began his literary career as a journalist, contributing to various publications including The Athenaeum and The Cornhill Magazine. In 1856, he published his first novel, "Hypatia," which was followed by a series of successful works, including "The Swiss Family Robinson of Cumberland" and "The Water-Babies." Despite his literary achievements, Kingsley faced personal tragedy throughout his life. In 1858, his wife, Fanny Sitwell, died by suicide, leaving him to raise their five children alone. He later married again, but his second wife, Mary Maple, died in childbirth in 1866. This CDV photograph, taken in 1876, captures a moment of quiet reflection from a man who lived a life filled with both triumph and heartache. Henry Kingsley's legacy as a novelist and brother continues to be celebrated in English literature and history.
