Henry, the son of King John Lackland, ascended to the throne at the tender age of nine upon his father's death in 1216. His mother, Isabella of Angouleme, ruled as regent until he came of age. In 1236, Henry married Eleanor, the daughter of Raymond Berengar IV, Count of Provence, in an effort to secure peace with the powerful province of Provence.
