EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the regal presence of King Henry II of England, who ruled from 1154 to 1189. Henry, born in 1133, was the third son of King Stephen and Matilda of Boulogne. He began his reign at the age of twenty-eight, following the death of his father, and quickly established himself as a powerful and capable monarch. Henry's reign was marked by significant achievements, including the conquest of Ireland and the establishment of the Angevin Empire, which included large parts of modern-day France. He also implemented important legal reforms, such as the Assize of Clarendon, which strengthened the power of the monarchy and established a more centralized system of government. Despite his many accomplishments, Henry's reign was not without controversy. He was known for his tempestuous relationship with his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their marriage was marked by numerous separations and periods of open conflict. Henry's eldest son, Henry the Young King, was also a source of tension, as he challenged his father's authority and sought to establish his own kingdom. Despite these challenges, Henry II remained a dominant figure in European politics until his death in 1189. He was succeeded by his son Richard the Lionheart, who went on to become one of the most famous kings in English history. This anonymous portrait of Henry II, which dates from the late 12th or early 13th century, captures the king's strong and commanding presence. He is depicted wearing a crown and a richly decorated robe, with a serious expression and a steady gaze. The portrait provides a glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the life and reign of one of England's most intriguing and complex monarchs.
