EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the revered figure of Henry Bathurst, the Lord Bishop of Norwich, as he is depicted in his full ecclesiastical regalia during the late 18th century. Born on March 19, 1744, in London, England, Henry Bathurst was educated at Eton College and the University of Cambridge before embarking on a distinguished career in the Church of England. Appointed Bishop of Norwich in 1787, Bathurst became a prominent figure in the religious and social landscape of the city. In this photograph, he is shown wearing the traditional attire of a bishop, including the mitre on his head and the robe and crosier in his hands. The intricately designed wig, which was a common accessory for bishops during this period, adds to the grandeur of the image. Bathurst's tenure as Bishop of Norwich was marked by his dedication to the welfare of his diocese and his commitment to the Anglican faith. He oversaw the construction of several new churches and schools, and worked to improve the living conditions of the poor in Norwich. Bathurst also played a role in the political and social life of the city, serving as a member of the Norfolk Quarter Sessions and the Norwich Corporation. Henry Bathurst continued to serve as Bishop of Norwich until his death on December 2, 1837. His legacy in the city remains strong, and this photograph serves as a reminder of the important role he played in the history of Norwich and the Church of England during a time of great change and transformation.
