EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant 18th-century portrait, Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk, is depicted in all her regal beauty. Born Henrietta Howard in 1681, she was the illegitimate daughter of Charles, 3rd Earl of Suffolk, and Elizabeth Bennet. Despite her humble beginnings, Henrietta would go on to become one of the most influential women of her time. At the young age of 17, Henrietta was appointed as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne. It was during her time at court that she caught the eye of King George I, who made her his mistress in 1715. Henrietta's relationship with the king lasted for over a decade, during which time she bore him several children. In 1724, Henrietta married Charles, 9th Earl of Suffolk, who was previously married to her sister Anne. The marriage was a strategic one, as it helped to legitimize Henrietta's children and secure her position at court. However, Henrietta's happiness was short-lived. Her husband died in 1726, and she was left a widow once again. In 1767, Henrietta married for the third time, this time to the Hon. George Berkeley, a prominent politician and writer. This portrait captures Henrietta in her later years, with her striking features still evident. Her elegant dress and jewels speak to her high status, while her confident expression suggests a woman who has lived a full and fascinating life. Henrietta Howard's story is one of love, power, and survival. From her humble beginnings as an illegitimate daughter to her position as a mistress of the king and a countess, Henrietta's life was filled with intrigue and drama. This portrait serves as a reminder of her enduring legacy and the impact she had on English history.
