EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Henrietta Maria, Queen of Charles I of England, signed with her own hand in the lower right corner. Henrietta Maria, born in Paris in 1609, was the daughter of Henry IV of France and Marie de' Medici. She married Prince Charles of Wales in 1625, and upon the death of Charles' father, King James I, in 1625, she became Queen Consort of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The portrait, created in 1669, depicts Henrietta Maria in regal attire, with a jeweled headdress adorning her dark curls and a velvet mantle draped over her shoulders. Her expressive eyes gaze out from the portrait with a sense of determination and strength, reflecting her role as a powerful queen and influential figure during the English Civil War. Henrietta Maria's reign was marked by controversy and conflict, as she was a devout Catholic in a predominantly Protestant country. Her support for her faith and her husband, who was exiled during the war, led to her being seen as a threat to the English establishment. She was forced to flee England in 1641 and spent the remainder of her life in exile, primarily in France. Despite the challenges she faced, Henrietta Maria remained a devoted wife and mother, and her influence extended beyond her role as queen. She was a patron of the arts and supported various charitable causes, including the establishment of a hospital in Paris for English exiles. Her signature on this portrait serves as a reminder of her enduring legacy as a historical figure and a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
