EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, Pl 40 from Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts King Henri III of France (1551-1589) surrounded by three of his most trusted and beloved male companions, known as mignons, at his royal court. The mignons were young, handsome men who were favored by the king for their charm, intelligence, and wit. They were often seen as the king's confidants and advisors, and played a significant role in court life. Henri III, the grandson of King Henry II and Catherine de Medici, ascended to the throne in 1574 at the age of 24. His reign was marked by political instability and religious conflicts, particularly with the Huguenots (French Protestants). Despite these challenges, the king was known for his extravagant tastes and his patronage of the arts. The three mignons depicted in the photograph are believed to be the Marquis de Bassompierre, the Comte de Montpensier, and the Marquis de Villars. They are shown in various poses, one kneeling before the king, another holding a fan, and the third looking off to the side. The king himself is dressed in the robes of the Order of the Holy Spirit, a prestigious order to which he belonged. This photograph offers a glimpse into the opulent and intriguing world of the French royal court during the late 16th century. It is a reminder of the complex relationships that existed between the monarch and his male companions, and the important role they played in the political and social landscape of the time.
