In 1574, Henri was elected King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, but he was forced to abdicate in 1576 due to political instability. In 1589, Henri was called upon to succeed his childless cousin, Charles IX, as King of France. His reign was marked by attempts to bring stability to the country, which was in the midst of religious and political turmoil.
