EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, taken on the Brocken mountain in Germany on 18 June 1932, two renowned figures of their time, Harry Price and C.E.M. Joad, are seen examining the preparations for a magical scene in connection with the Goethe Centenary celebrations. Harry Price (1881-1948), a prominent British paranormal investigator, and C.E.M. Joad (1891-1953), a British philosopher and broadcaster, are deep in conversation as they survey the circle and symbols laid out before them. The Brocken, a notorious site of legends and folklore, was believed to be the place where witches held their Sabbaths and where Goethe's Faust sold his soul to the devil. The centenary celebrations of Goethe's birth, which took place in 1932, included various reenactments and experiments to commemorate the famous German writer's connection to the mountain. Price, an expert in the field of spiritualism and the supernatural, was intrigued by the historical significance of the Brocken and its association with Goethe. Joad, who was also interested in the philosophical aspects of the supernatural, accompanied Price on this investigative journey. Together, they explored the magical scene being prepared for the celebrations, examining the symbols and circle with great interest. This photograph captures a moment in time when two influential figures from different fields came together to delve into the mysteries of the past and the unknown. The image is a testament to their curiosity and the enduring fascination with the unexplained and the supernatural. It is a historical snapshot that offers a glimpse into the minds of two men who dared to question the boundaries of the known world and sought answers to the unknown.
