This evocative image depicts Hagar, the servant-girl of Sarah, wandering in the desert with her young son Ishmael. The scene is drawn from the Old Testament of the Bible, specifically the book of Genesis (21:14-21). According to the biblical narrative, Hagar had been given to Abraham as a wife, as Sarah was barren, and Hagar bore Ishmael to Abraham. However, when Sarah gave birth to Isaac, Abraham was pressured by Sarah to send Hagar and Ishmael away, out of fear that they would be a source of conflict within their household. Hagar and Ishmael were left to fend for themselves in the harsh desert wilderness, with only a small skin of water and a few loaves of bread to sustain them. Despairing and fearing for their lives, Hagar wept before the Lord, pleading for His mercy and intervention. An angel of the Lord appeared to them in the desert, offering them comfort and guidance. The angel instructed Hagar to go to a spring of water, where she would find sustenance for herself and her son.
