EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment of Roman Emperor Hadrian (76-138 AD) overseeing the construction of Hadrian's Wall, a testament to the engineering prowess and military might of the ancient Roman Empire. Built between 122 and 128 AD, Hadrian's Wall marked the northernmost boundary of the Roman province of Britannia, running from the Solway Firth in the west to the River Tyne in the east. Its primary purpose was to exclude the indigenous Pictish tribes, or 'Scots,' from the Roman-controlled territories in Britain. Emperor Hadrian, known for his extensive travels and his personal involvement in the administration of his empire, is depicted here in regal attire, wearing a toga and a laurel wreath, symbolizing his imperial power and military triumphs. He is shown in deep concentration, likely assessing the progress of the wall's construction, as soldiers and laborers work diligently in the background. Hadrian's Wall was a remarkable engineering feat, stretching over 73 miles (117 kilometers) and reaching a height of up to 20 feet (6 meters) in some places. It was built using a combination of local materials, including turf, timber, and stone, and was fortified with a series of forts, milecastles, and watchtowers. The wall's construction represented a significant investment in Roman defense and control of their territories, and it remained an effective border until the late 4th century AD. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Roman Empire extended its reach to the shores of Britain and the construction of Hadrian's Wall marked a pivotal moment in the history of the region.
