EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: His Grace The Duke of Cambridge in Full Military Regalia, 1904 This evocative black-and-white photograph captures His Grace The Duke of Cambridge, George William Frederick Charles, in his resplendent military uniform, standing proudly before an ornate fireplace. Born on January 6, 1819, the Duke, who was the third son of King George III, served in the British Army with distinction throughout his life. The Duke, who was known as Prince George when he was in the military, began his military career in 1836 when he joined the 1st Dragoon Guards. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Major-General in 1854 and a Field Marshal in 1863. The Duke's military accomplishments were numerous, including his service in the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. In this photograph, taken in 1904, The Duke of Cambridge, who was then 85 years old, is shown in the full regalia of his rank as a Field Marshal. The intricately designed uniform, complete with braids, medals, and insignia, is a testament to his long and distinguished military career. The Duke's stern expression and upright posture convey a sense of authority and dignity, making this photograph a powerful reminder of the rich history of the British military and its noble leaders. The Duke of Cambridge, who passed away in 1904, left behind a legacy of military excellence and dedication to duty. This photograph, with its striking image of The Duke in his military uniform, is a fitting tribute to his life and accomplishments. Mary Evans Picture Library's collection of historical photographs offers a unique and valuable resource for those interested in military history, royalty, and the history of the British Isles. This photograph of The Duke of Cambridge is just one of the many treasures to be found in their extensive archive.
