1850 1898 Maupassant

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic and intellectual figure of Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893), a renowned French writer and author whose works continue to captivate readers around the world. Taken in 1898, the image finds Maupassant in the prime of his literary career, with a distinguished air and a penetrating gaze that belies the depth and complexity of his stories. Born in Bordeaux, France, Maupassant's early life was marked by tragedy and hardship. After a brief stint in the military, he turned to writing, publishing his first short story, "Boule de Suif," in 1880. The story, which follows the journey of a prostitute during the Franco-Prussian War, was an instant success and established Maupassant as a leading voice in modern French literature. Over the next two decades, Maupassant produced a prolific body of work, including novels, short stories, and plays. Some of his most famous works include "Maison Tellier," "Bel-Ami," and "The Horla." His writing was characterized by its naturalistic style, its exploration of the human condition, and its unflinching portrayal of the darker aspects of society. Despite his literary success, Maupassant's personal life was marked by tragedy and heartache. He was known to be a heavy drinker, and his mental health deteriorated in his later years. In 1892, he was committed to a mental institution, where he spent the final year of his life before taking his own life in 1893. This photograph of Maupassant, taken just five years before his death, offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and fascinating figure. With his piercing gaze and thoughtful expression, he seems to be contemplating the world around him, a world that he so masterfully captured in his writing.
