This image, taken from Jonathan Swift's classic 1726 work "Gulliver's Travels," depicts the moment when the intrepid explorer Lemuel Gulliver finds himself at the mercy of the tiny inhabitants of Lilliput. The people of Lilliput, in an attempt to assert their dominance over the much larger traveler, have bound him with ropes and other makeshift restraints. Gulliver, his once towering figure now diminished, is shown lying on the ground, attempting to rise but not able to stir. Swift's satirical novel, filled with fantastical adventures, had been published just four years prior to this illustration's creation. The book, which detailed Gulliver's encounters with various bizarre and intriguing lands and peoples, quickly became a literary sensation and remains a beloved classic of English literature to this day.
