EDITORS COMMENTS
Guillaume de Croy, also known as Guillaume de Larmes, was a prominent Flemish military figure during the early 16th century. Born in 1488, he rose to prominence under the reign of King Henry VIII of England, serving as a trusted advisor and military commander. In this striking portrait, Guillaume de Croy is depicted wearing the insignia of his military rank, including a heavy chain draped around his neck and a fur-trimmed hat adorned with a feather. The chain signified his knighthood, while the hat denoted his high military rank. The tears or "larmes" in his title are believed to refer to his participation in a battle where he showed great bravery and shed tears for the loss of his men. The year 1521 is inscribed on the portrait, indicating that it was created during the height of Guillaume de Croy's military career. The intricate detailing of his clothing and accessories, as well as the somber expression on his face, convey a sense of gravity and importance. Guillaume de Croy's military achievements were significant, and he played a key role in several major battles during the early 16th century. He was a skilled strategist and a brave commander, earning the respect and loyalty of his men and the admiration of his peers. Despite his military successes, however, Guillaume de Croy's life was cut short. He was executed in 1528 on charges of treason, bringing an abrupt end to his illustrious career. This portrait serves as a reminder of his important place in Flemish military history, and the complex and often unpredictable nature of power and politics during the Renaissance era.
