EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Ground Plan of Millbank Prison, London (1862) Millbank Prison, located on the banks of the River Thames in London, was one of the most notorious penal institutions in Victorian England. This detailed ground plan, dated 1862, offers a comprehensive view of the prison's layout and design, providing insights into the daily lives and living conditions of its inmates. The prison, which was originally built as a workhouse for paupers in 1816, underwent significant expansion and transformation into a prison in 1822. The ground plan reveals the various wings, cells, yards, and other structures that made up the sprawling complex. The central part of the prison housed the chapel, hospital, and administrative buildings, while the peripheral wings were dedicated to housing the male and female inmates. Each cell, measuring a mere 6 feet by 3 feet, was designed to accommodate one prisoner, although overcrowding was a common problem. The plan also shows the exercise yards, where inmates were allowed to spend a few hours each day, and the various workshops, where they could earn a small wage through laboring. Millbank Prison was notorious for its harsh conditions and punitive regime. Inmates were subjected to long hours of hard labor, meager rations, and physical abuse. The prison's infamous treadmill, which was used for punishment, is not visible in this plan, but it was a notorious feature of the prison. Despite the harsh conditions, Millbank Prison remained in operation until 1890, when it was replaced by Pentonville Prison. Today, the site is home to the Millbank Tower and the Ministry of Defence. This ground plan serves as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of the Victorian penal system and the lives of those who were incarcerated within its walls.
