EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, showcases a herd of Greenland Cattle grazing peacefully in a lush, verdant landscape. The Greenland Cattle, also known as the Arctic Musk Oxen Cattle or Ungava Cattle, are an indigenous breed that has roamed the Arctic regions of Greenland, Canada, and Labrador for centuries. The history of these unique cattle can be traced back to the early 18th century when European settlers introduced domestic cattle to the Arctic. However, due to the harsh climate and limited resources, these European cattle did not thrive. Instead, they interbred with the wild Arctic musk oxen, giving rise to the hardy and resilient Greenland Cattle. By the late 1800s, Greenland Cattle had become an essential source of food and livelihood for the Inuit people of Greenland. The cattle were well-adapted to the extreme climate, with thick coats that provided insulation against the cold, and a strong constitution that enabled them to survive on meager resources. This photograph, taken in 1897, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the close relationship between the Inuit people and their livestock. The cattle are seen grazing in a picturesque setting, with snow-capped mountains and a clear blue sky in the background. The scene is idyllic, yet it also underscores the harsh realities of life in the Arctic. Despite their historical significance, Greenland Cattle are now a rare and endangered breed. Their numbers have dwindled due to a lack of interest in their preservation and the encroachment of modern agriculture. Today, efforts are being made to revive the breed and preserve its unique genetic characteristics. This photograph serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of these remarkable animals.
