Green turtle

Green turtle. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) swimming beside a coral reef. This turtle uses its powerful paddle-like front limbs to propel itself through the water. Its name derives from the colour of its flesh. The green turtle is one of the largest turtles, growing up to 150 centimetres in length. Found in all warm tropical waters, C. mydas is almost completely aquatic. Only the female ever leaves the water: she does so to nest, returning to the beach where she was born to lay her eggs. Photographed off Palau Sipadan, Malaysia

Chelonia Mydas Coral Reef Endangered Green Turtle Herbivore Herbivorous Moving Rare Reptile Reptilia Solitary Swimming Threatened Aquatic Reptile

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grace and beauty of a Green turtle as it glides effortlessly through the crystal-clear waters beside a vibrant coral reef. With its paddle-like front limbs propelling it forward, this magnificent creature showcases its remarkable swimming abilities. Aptly named for the color of its flesh, the Green turtle is one of the largest turtles in existence, reaching lengths of up to 150 centimeters. Endowed with an almost entirely aquatic lifestyle, Chelonia mydas can be found in warm tropical waters across the globe. However, it is only the female that ventures onto land; she returns to her birthplace beach to lay her eggs before returning to her watery domain. This solitary reptile's presence in this photograph highlights both its rarity and significance within marine ecosystems. As an herbivore, this threatened species plays a crucial role in maintaining balance within coral reefs by feeding on algae and seagrass. Its importance cannot be overstated as these habitats face increasing endangerment due to human activities. Photographed off Palau Sipadan in Malaysia, this image serves as a reminder of nature's wonders and our responsibility to protect them. The Science Photo Library has expertly captured this moment showcasing not just a single green turtle but also shedding light on broader topics such as zoology, wildlife conservation efforts, and underwater exploration.
