EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Prince Andreas of Greece (1882-1944) is seen proudly wearing his military uniform, displaying his regal bearing and strong sense of duty. Born in Athens, Greece, on February 17, 1882, Prince Andreas was the second son of King George I and Queen Olga. He was the elder brother of King Constantine I and the father of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark. Prince Andreas served in the Greek military with distinction, rising to the rank of General and playing a significant role in the Balkan Wars and the Greco-Turkish War. In 1915, he was exiled from Greece following a military coup, and he and his family lived in Switzerland and France for several years. Despite his exile, Prince Andreas remained deeply committed to his Greek heritage and his royal duties. He was a patron of the arts and a supporter of various charitable organizations. In this photograph, he is shown holding the Greek flag, a symbol of his loyalty and pride in his country. Prince Andreas' life was marked by both triumph and tragedy. He was a beloved figure in Greek society, but his political affiliations and his role in various military conflicts led to periods of exile and turmoil. In 1917, his eldest son, Crown Prince Constantine, was killed in action during World War I, leaving Prince Andreas to mourn the loss of his heir. Despite these challenges, Prince Andreas remained a dedicated and respected member of the Greek royal family until his death on March 2, 1944. His legacy continues to be celebrated in Greece and around the world, and his commitment to duty, family, and country remains an inspiration to this day.
