Greece, Crete - Arrival of Prince George
Although much of modern Greece had been independent since the 1820s, Crete remained in Ottoman hands. A Greek force arrived to annex the island in 1897 and the Great Powers acted, occupying the island and dividing it into British, French, Russian and Italian areas of control. In 1898, Turkish troops were ejected and a national government was set up, still nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. Prince George, was made High Commissioner, and a joint Muslim-Christian assembly was part-elected, part-appointed. This remarkable card actually records Georges arrival on Crete

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the historic moment of Prince George's arrival on the shores of Crete in 1898, marking a significant turning point in the island's long-standing struggle for independence. At the time, much of modern Greece had gained its freedom from Ottoman rule, but Crete remained under Ottoman control. In an effort to annex the island, a Greek force was sent, leading to the intervention of the Great Powers who divided the island into British, French, Russian, and Italian areas of control. Prince George, the Duke of Cambridge, was appointed as High Commissioner by the Great Powers, tasked with establishing a national government, still nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. The arrival of Prince George signified the beginning of the end for Ottoman rule in Crete and brought hope to the Greek population for a brighter future. This remarkable photograph, taken from the extensive collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, provides a unique glimpse into a pivotal moment in Greek history. The image captures the excitement and anticipation of the crowd as they welcome the High Commissioner to their shores, their faces filled with hope and determination for a free and independent Crete.
