EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment frozen in time on Great George Street, Westminster, London. Taken on September 24,1902, the image showcases the construction of the New Government Offices, which would later become known as HM Treasury. In this snapshot from over a century ago, work momentarily halts as laborers take a break during their arduous task. The grandeur of these new government buildings is evident even in their incomplete state. Designed by J M Brydon and Sir Henry Tanner of the Office of Works, they were constructed in two phases and wouldn't be fully finished until 1915. Standing tall behind these modern structures are the previous generation of government offices designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and Matthew Digby Wyatt between 1861 and 1873. This stark contrast highlights the evolution of architectural styles over time. The renowned photography firm B Bolas & Co was responsible for capturing this remarkable scene using silver gelatin DOP (developing out paper) print technology. Their expertise extended beyond this project as they secured multiple government contracts to document new buildings and temporary structures. Preserved within Historic England's archives, this photo offers us a glimpse into Edwardian-era construction practices while showcasing an important chapter in British history. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and dedication that transformed Great George Street into an iconic symbol of governmental power.
