EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the tranquil winter landscape of Bertangles Cemetery near Amiens, northern France, lies the grave of Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, the legendary Red Baron, a name synonymous with heroism and bravery during the First World War. Born on May 2, 1892, in Germany, Richthofen rose to fame as the top-scoring fighter pilot of the war, with a total of 80 confirmed victories. His distinctive red triplane and fearless demeanor in the skies made him an iconic figure, both feared and revered by Allied forces. On April 21, 1918, Richthofen was engaged in a dogfight near Vaux-sur-Somme and was fatally wounded. He was initially buried in the nearby Château-sur-Cojeul, but his remains were later transferred and reinterred in Germany's Friedhof Valdahon in Altenburg, Thuringia, on March 4, 1922. This poignant image captures the winter scene at Bertangles Cemetery, where the Red Baron's grave is adorned with flowers, a testament to the enduring legacy of this heroic and enigmatic figure. The snow-covered ground adds a sense of stillness and solemnity, as if time itself has come to a standstill in honor of the Red Baron's indelible mark on military aviation history.
