Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare burns down in 1930

The Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare burns down on 13th January 1930. The pavilion was completely destroyed with surrounding amusement booths and part of the pier itself. The rescue effort was hampered by the water supply to the pier having been cut off at the shore end as the attraction was closed for the winter. The flames were so high they were visible from Cardiff. The Grand Pier was reconstructed, but suffered the same tragic fate on the morning of the 28th July 2008 as fire once again destroyed this magnificent structure

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Tragic Night: The Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare in Flames, January 13, 1930 This evocative photograph captures the devastating aftermath of the Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare going up in flames on the night of January 13, 1930. The once-magnificent pavilion, a beloved sea-side attraction, was completely destroyed by the raging inferno, along with surrounding amusement booths and part of the pier itself. The sight of the pier aflame was so breathtakingly tragic that it was visible from as far away as Cardiff. The rescue effort was hampered by the water supply to the pier having been cut off at the shore end, as the attraction was closed for the winter. Firemen, determined to save what they could, raised ladders and fought valiantly against the towering flames that engulfed the pier. The crowd, a mixture of onlookers and concerned citizens, gathered on the shore, watching in disbelief as their cherished pier was reduced to ashes. The destruction of the Grand Pier was a significant loss to the historical and cultural fabric of Weston-Super-Mare. The pier, which had opened in 1866, was a beloved attraction that had brought joy to generations of visitors. Despite the best efforts of the community, the damage was too extensive to repair, and the pier remained closed for several years. Tragically, the Grand Pier would suffer the same fate once again on the morning of July 28, 2008, when fire once again destroyed this magnificent structure. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the past, a testament to the resilience of the community, and a reminder of the transience of even the most enduring structures.
