EDITORS COMMENTS
This image transports us back to the Paris Opera in 1862, where the world premiere of Charles Gounod's opera "Reine de Saba" (Queen of Sheba) took place. In this scene from Act 5, King Solomon's court is in full regal splendor, showcasing the grandeur and opulence of the biblical tale. The King, resplendent in his royal robes, sits on his throne, surrounded by his loyal advisors and courtiers. At the center of attention is the enigmatic Queen of Sheba, played by the renowned soprano, as she approaches the stage, accompanied by her retinue of exotic dancers and musicians. The Queen, who has heard rumors of King Solomon's wisdom, has come to test him and offer her riches in exchange for his wisdom. This historical production, which premiered on December 8, 1862, was a major success for Gounod and marked the beginning of his international reputation as a leading opera composer. The opera was based on the biblical story of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, as recounted in the Old Testament. The libretto was written by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, and the production was directed by the renowned French opera director, Léon Carvalho. The ornate costumes and sets, which were designed by the famous French scenic painter, Gabriel-Jules Thomas, added to the overall grandeur and spectacle of the production. The opera was performed to great acclaim and ran for over 100 performances in its initial run. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of opera and the opulence of 19th-century theatrical productions.
