Gods Provident House - Chester

Gods Provident House - Watergate Street, Chester. This building is famous for its inscription on the front reading: Gods providence is mine inheritance. It is thought this was the only house in Chester to escape the Black Death. The last outbreak of black death was in 1647-8, five years before the house was built. 2000 people in total died in Chester alone. The inscription was also taken by the Earl of Cork as his motto in 1620. Date: circa 1910s

God's Providence is Mine Inheritance

EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Historical Glance at Chester's Survivor of the Black Death This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic facade of God's Provident House, situated on Watergate Street in the heart of Chester. The inscription etched into the stonework, "God's providence is mine inheritance," has long intrigued visitors to this ancient city. The origins of this house date back to the late 1600s, a time when Chester was grappling with the devastating effects of the Black Death. The last major outbreak of this deadly disease occurred between 1647 and 1648, claiming an estimated 2000 lives within the city walls. Miraculously, God's Provident House seems to have been spared from the ravages of the plague. The inscription on the house became a source of inspiration for Thomas Butler, the 1st Earl of Cork, who adopted it as his personal motto in 1620. The Earl's connection to the house is not definitively known, but the association adds an intriguing layer of history to the building. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, captures the house in a quieter era, with a horse-drawn cart making its way along the cobbled Watergate Street. The cobbles, worn smooth by centuries of use, bear witness to the passage of time. The wagon, laden with goods, adds a sense of industry and commerce to the scene, reminding us that life continued, even amidst the shadows of the past. The God's Provident House stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of faith. Its inscription continues to inspire reflection and wonder, inviting us to ponder the role of providence in our own lives.
