At the heart of this magnificent structure, two iconic figures come to life every hour. Lady Godiva, the legendary 11th-century noblewoman, is depicted riding naked on her horse, defying the puritanical norms of her time. The story goes that she rode through the streets of Coventry in this manner to gain a remission of the heavy taxes imposed by her husband, Leofric. Peering from a window above, we see the curious figure of Peeping Tom, who, according to the legend, disregarded Godiva's request for privacy and watched her ride by. Ever since, he has been cursed with eternal shame and is said to be turned to stone whenever someone looks at him. The intricate carvings on the clock tower bring the tale to life, as the hands of the clock move, Lady Godiva and Peeping Tom come into view, adding an element of whimsy and intrigue to this historic structure. The play of light and shadow on the clock face further enhances the allure of this image, making it a true testament to the rich history and folklore of Coventry.
