EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Hel, the enigmatic Norse goddess of the Underworld. Daughter of the mischievous trickster god Loki, Hel rules over the realm of the dead, a chilling domain located in the north. Hel's appearance is both alluring and terrifying. She is often portrayed as a beautiful woman with a cold, stern expression, wearing a veil or a helmet adorned with horns. In her hands, she holds the keys to the Underworld, symbolizing her control over the realm of the deceased. A faithful dog, Garmr, accompanies her, guarding the gates of Helheim, the underworld. Hel's mythological significance is deeply rooted in Norse history and mythology. According to the Poetic Edda, when the world was created, Hel was given the realm of the dead as her domain. Those who died of old age, sickness, or in childbirth were considered worthy of joining her in Helheim. Hel herself was not considered evil but rather the neutral ruler of the underworld. The serpent, Jormungandr, is also associated with Hel and the Underworld. In Norse mythology, Jormungandr is the Midgard Serpent, the giant serpent that encircles the world in the ocean. Hel and Jormungandr are believed to be siblings, and their connection to the Underworld further emphasizes the association between death and the waters. This print, with its intricate details and rich symbolism, offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of Norse mythology and the enigmatic figure of Hel, the goddess of the Underworld.
